Botox for Hyperhidrosis

Botox for Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating. Sweating is one of the most important ways in which your body loses heat however people with hyperhidrosis produce much more sweat than is needed. It is estimated that between 1-3% of the population has excessive sweating.

Hyperhidrosis can cause embarrassment at work or socially and can lower a person’s self-esteem.

Botox® has been licensed by Allergan since 2011 for the treatment of hyperhidrosis. By injecting Botox® into the skin in the armpit it blocks the actions of the nerves that supply the eccrine glands which prevents the glands from producing sweat.

The Procedure

Procedure time

30 – 45 mins

Full recovery

24 hours

Results duration

6 – 12 months

Mild discomfort

Bruising, tenderness, failure to reduce sweating

What areas can be treated?

The underarms are the most common site where excess sweating is a problem. Palms of hands and soles of feet can also be treated but are rather sensitive.

After a consultation to define your needs I go on to perform the treatment which last approximately 30 minutes and involves approximately 15 small injections into each armpit. I offer you the option of a topical anaesthetic cream however as the needle I use is so small the procedure is relatively painless.

Sweating tends to decrease within a couple of weeks. In clinical trials, sweat production was reduced by 83% one week after treatment. We do advise you not to exercise and to avoid alcohol for 24 hours after the procedure. The effects last from 6-12 months and most people choose to have this procedure repeatedly.

Dr Claudia Petillon

There is increasing pressure on us these days to appear ‘ageless’ and conform to celebrity ideals and this in turn can lead to confidence issues which I all too often see as a doctor.

I truly believe in a ‘less is more’ philosophy and want to work with my clients to achieve a more youthful version of themselves whilst retaining their full range of expression and not giving them a mask like look. I want your friends to comment on how well you are looking but not be able to tell that you have had a cosmetic treatment. That’s a secret that you can choose to keep to yourself!
