What is a PDO Thread Lift?

This is a procedure which rejuvenates, regenerates and improves the structure of the face, in a similar way to a surgical facelift, but without the need for surgery. Special threads are inserted into the skin via a fine needle to lift tissue and muscle and improve skin texture.

What areas can be treated?

The threads are extremely versatile and can be used all around the face, neck and body. Threads can treat vertical and horizontal wrinkles on the forehead, sagging brows, drooping cheeks, pronounced naso-labial folds (nose to mouth) and marionette (corner of mouth to chin) folds, sagging jawline, neck and folds and wrinkles on the chin.

Please take into consideration the following; Bruising can happen. The degree of bruising varies not only depending on the area being treated, but also from patient to patient.  Redness of the area post treatment is common and can last up to 24 hours.

A follow up appointment will be arranged 1-3 months after the procedure to review the effects of the threads. PDO threads can also be used as an adjunct to Botox and fillers to enhance lift and youthfulness.

How does this treatment work?

Threads are made of soluble PDO (polydioxanone), which is a material that has been used in medicine for many years, mainly in surgery. However, research has shown that PDO relaxes muscles and tendons, and also stimulates the neocollagenesis process, which encourages the production of new collagen in the skin. PDO also stimulates the synthesis of elastin and hyaluronic acid in the skin, both of which are vital for keeping the skin looking plump and youthful.

The procedure can take up to an hour depending on the number of threads inserted. A topical numbing cream or injected local anaesthetic is used for optimal comfort.

A lifted appearance can be seen immediately following the treatment, however, the results will improve in the following days and weeks. The overall texture of the skin is improved; it becomes thicker, tighter and firmer and fine lines and wrinkles are smoothed away as the PDO Threads dissolve away over the following 90-180 days. The remaining results can last up to 18 months.

Is it safe?

PDO has been used for cutaneous and subcutaneous sutures in surgical procedures for more than 30 years and has an excellent safety profile. Its extremely high tensile strength, excellent pliability and ability to pass through tissue makes it the perfect thread to use in aesthetics. Although the procedure is relatively pain free, depending on the area being treated and the amount of PDO threads that are required, topical anaesthetic or a local anaesthetic injection may be used to make the treatment more pleasant.

Is it safe?

Bruising can happen. The degree of bruising varies not only depending on the area being treated, but also from patient to patient. Redness of the area post treatment is common and can last up to 24 hours.

The risk of infection is low and minimised by correct technique and antibiotic cover. If the treated area becomes red or warm and tender then it is essential to contact the clinic for a review.

There may be some dimpling of the skin where the sutures were inserted, this is normal and will resolve within several days. The initial lifting effect will generally be more pronounced and will settle over a few days.

Aftercare

Avoid using make up on the treated area for 24 hours as this may disturb the threads and increase the risk of infection. Do not massage or disturb the area. Avoid direct pressure for three weeks and try to avoid sleeping on your face. Keep facial movements to a minimum for 3 weeks and this includes excessive chewing, talking and yawning.
