As we get older, we see many ageing changes to the face, from the superficial in the form of lines and wrinkles to structural alterations to face shape. Aesthetic injectables and threads can reverse many of these signs of ageing and restore a more youthful appearance to the face.
In the youthful face, the facial features are well contoured and defined. This is described as the triangle of youth, but over time this triangle becomes inverted due to changes to the facial bones and the descent of the soft tissues such as the fat pads, muscle and skin.
The fat pads provide the contours and fullness of the face, but over the years they thin and descend. This is particularly evident in the mid-face where hollows form below the eyes and the cheeks become sunken. This loss of volume affects the lower third of the face as folds appear between the nose and mouth and a less defined jawline and double chin emerges.
Our facial muscles are below the fat pads and are responsible for our facial expressions. The constant contraction of our facial muscles creates dynamic wrinkles, such as frown lines, crow’s feet, and smile lines.
Bone reabsorption also occurs, and we see temples form at the hollows and a less sculpted jaw.
