Double Chin Treatment

A double chin is a common cause for concern for our male and female patients. It is often associated with weight gain, but even slim, toned patients can be dissatisfied with the shape of the lower face and feel it makes them appear heavier or older than they are.

Diet and exercise alone are often unable to eradicate stubborn pockets of fat that accumulate under the chin or skin sagging, which contribute to the appearance of a double chin.

At Dr CP Aesthetics, we offer several clinically proven techniques to minimise submental fat deposits and tighten the skin.

What are the causes of a double chin?

An accumulation of stubborn fat under the chin, known as submental fat, is one of the most visible indications that you have put on a few pounds. It can also result from genetics, as some people are predisposed to store fat under the chin. A naturally smaller or weaker chin can direct more attention to the chin and the neck.

Poor posture can also contribute, as it weakens the platysma muscles, which connect the chin to the neck. Over time, this can result in reduced skin elasticity and sagging under the chin and along the jawline.

It is also often linked to ageing changes as we lose elastin and collagen from our mid-twenties onwards. These components in the dermis play an essential role in keeping the face looking taut and youthful by providing structure and elasticity.

Unfortunately, it’s impossible to target specific areas of the body with diet and exercise alone, and many men and women suffer from stubborn pockets of fat. However, there are non-surgical treatments specifically designed to remove fat cells permanently.

Fat-solving injections are designed to treat localised pockets of fat. Sodium deoxycholate is a synthetic form of Deoxycholate Acid, a bile acid that emulsifies fat before it is absorbed by the gut. When injected into the dermis, it dissolves fat cells before they are safely eliminated by the body.

Non-invasive skin tightening treatments can address mild to moderate skin sagging. 3D HIFU uses High Intensity Focused Ultrasound to heat targeted areas of the face, including the neck, jawline and lower face. The result is an immediate contraction of the skin and collagen stimulation, which continues to finetune results over the following weeks and months.

Facial balancing with dermal fillers can help disguise a weak, recessed chin. Injectable fillers can reshape the jawline, lift soft tissues, and improve facial proportions, effectively improving the appearance of a double chin.

There is increasing pressure on us these days to appear ‘ageless’ and conform to celebrity ideals and this in turn can lead to confidence issues which I all too often see as a doctor.

I truly believe in a ‘less is more’ philosophy and want to work with my clients to achieve a more youthful version of themselves whilst retaining their full range of expression and not giving them a mask like look. I want your friends to comment on how well you are looking but not be able to tell that you have had a cosmetic treatment (that’s a secret that you can choose to keep to yourself)!
